Strange Bodies for a Strange Planet is inspired by the French-Czech film 'Fantastic Planet'. The art style was enough to captivate our group of designers. Although a children's movie, it explores dark societal themes and leaves the viewer feeling uncomfortable. The other designers and I wanted to capture the film's beauty and uneasiness, as discomfort is often the catalyst for the most impactful and worthwhile art. The alien's blue skin and piercing red eyes, their otherworldly attire, organic shapes, and nudity were a few elements we all translated into our designs. Most inspiring is the film's lack of shortcuts. The director didn't type a prompt into AI to create the movie; he spent years on the cutout animation technique. As shortcuts become increasingly celebrated, we wanted true dedication to shine through in our work just as it did in the film.
