L'Uomo Strano
ABOUT THE DESIGNER
Mic. Carter is a Toronto-based designer whose work interrogates the intersections of fashion, futurity, social justice, and community. Informed by the histories of racialized labor and resistance embedded in fashion’s global supply chain, their practice engages clothing as both a site of constraint and liberation. Through experimental design and stylization, Carter explores how garments can embolden those navigating the slippages of cis-heteronormativity and femme-phobia, grounding their approach in ethnographic embodiment and speculative aesthetics. L’Uomo Strano emerges from this inquiry—a brand committed to crafting responsive beauty for the femme-identified and gender-expansive wardrobe while challenging the historical erasure of Black and queer bodies in the fashion lexicon.

DEAD NAME
FASHN DISRPTR Award
DEAD NAME is an exploration of erasure, resistance, and transformation. Rooted in the evolving political climate, it interrogates the escalating assault on trans existence and the inextricable link between Black liberation and gender freedom. In a world where Black, queer, and trans bodies are constantly policed, legislated against, and denied autonomy, this collection reclaims fashion as a site of protection, defiance, and radical self-determination. Fashion has long been weaponized—used to regulate bodies, enforce binaries, and commodify identities. DEAD NAME disrupts these histories, subverting the aesthetic codes that have historically erased or disciplined those who refuse to conform. Through experimental silhouettes, textile interventions, and a commitment to responsive beauty, the collection reimagines adornment as armor, visibility as resistance, and self-expression as a non-negotiable act of survival. To name is to acknowledge. To rename is to reclaim. DEAD NAME does not mourn what was imposed but celebrates what is self-determined. It envisions a future where Black, queer, and trans bodies are not just seen but safeguarded, where the dolls are protected, and where fashion moves beyond spectacle to become a site of true liberation.
