ABOUT THE DESIGNER
Kyana Kingbird is a Mi’kmaw and Ojibwe dancer, artist, community worker, designer and stylist who blends her many passions into conceptual art, statements, and workshops that speak to her lived experiences as an Indigenous woman. Her work is primarily focused on shining her light on the beauty in her subconscious thoughts and ideas, filtered through an Indigenous lens based on her teachings growing up.

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY IS THE FINAL FRONTIER.
The colonization of the mind is the final frontier. The concept of colonization is not a one new to Indigenous people. We have lost so much- our land, our languages, our foods, even our children. All taken in the name of colonialism. The Mind and Intellectual Property as a Final Frontier is a reference to how ideas how co-opted when you bring them into existence in the public sphere. By wanting to share a piece of who you are and turning that subconscious idea into a tangible piece of reality, the colonial aspect comes into play when those tangible pieces are stolen and worn on someone else’s skin. It feels as though your subconscious thoughts, your spirit, are worn in someone else mind. After my spirit, what else is left to take?
