Costalito De Amor

ABOUT THE DESIGNER

My name is Alexa Villegas, and this is my brand Costalito de Amor. Growing up, I always dreamed of having a brand where I could express myself and share my love of fashion with the world. Costalito de Amor means “sack of love”, and is a nickname my abuelos (my grandparents) in Mexico call me. I was born in Toluca, Mexico, and moved to Victoria, BC when I was 3 years old. Growing up on the West Coast was incredibly special, but I always felt there was a huge lack of diversity and visible latin community. My parents were strong role models for my brother and me, raising us in a Mexican household and teaching us about our culture and traditions. Since moving to Toronto in 2021, I have felt that I have let part of my culture and traditions slip away from me.

Costalito de Amor exists to help me stay connected to my roots, share my love for fashion, and celebrate my heritage with others. My pieces are heavily inspired by my culture and places in Mexico that mean the most to me. Sustainability is incredibly important to me and my brand. Every item at Costalito de Amor is handmade from reclaimed textiles, which are either pre-loved garments, scrap materials, or deadstock fabric. Thank you for being here with me on this journey and I can’t wait to keep growing and sharing my art with you.

Con mucho amor xxx,

De La Tierra

“De la Tierra” is a love letter to heritage, a collection inspired by Mexican art, textiles, and storytelling, blended with the clean lines and structure of modern silhouettes. This collection reflects the experience of growing up in Canada as a Mexican immigrant, the feeling of being rooted in a culture that’s physically distant, yet spiritually ever-present.
Split into three interconnected concepts, each with five looks, the collection traces a journey: from tradition, to modernism, to roots. Each theme speaks to the next, curating a cohesive story of cultural duality, belonging, and pride. Some garments are made from non-virgen textiles and garment dyed with Natural Dye from dried hibiscus flower (a flower used to make “Jamaica” a fresh water drink I grew up drinking at home).
What makes De la Tierra even more special is that some of my family will be coming from Mexico to watch it, some of them stepping foot in Canada for the very first time. Their presence is not just representation, but reclamation and connection.
Some accessories are handmade by family members back home in Mexico who couldn’t be here, their love present in each piece. This collection is dedicated to them, to my tías, tíos, abuelos, papás, hermano y primos, who shaped who I am, and who continue to ground me in where I’m from.

This is for them. This is for us.
